Virginia General Assembly Update – Week 7

Two weeks left in session! Here are a couple key updates.

New materials on extreme abortion amendment: This week, we posted two new resources on our vacatholic.org/Amendment webpage. This page contains information and resources to help fight the extreme abortion amendment that will be on the ballot this November. The first new item is a VOTE NO flyer highlighting the grave dangers this radical and deadly amendment poses to parental rights and to women’s health and safety. The second is a Prayer for Protection from the amendment. We encourage parishes to make wide use of these new resources.

Budget debates: Yesterday, the House and Senate passed their respective budget bills. The two chambers will begin working soon to resolve differences between their proposals.

Both versions make significant investments to expand access to affordable housing and healthcare, including prenatal care. A deeply disappointing outcome, however, is that both chambers rejected attempts to conform Virginia’s budget policy to the federal Hyde Amendment restrictions on abortion funding.
